Metris was established in 1995 as a spin-off of the University of Leuven’s Production engineering, machine design and automation department. With sophisticated R&D as its core business, supplemented by a limited service offering, Metris managed during its early years to learn to understand customer needs by delivering services and to apply its core technology and know how to develop a software package for quality control and reverse engineering based on a new paradigm in the industry i.e. the measurement of point clouds. Point clouds are huge groups of measurement data of 3 dimensional coordinates (X,Y,Z). As Metris was one of the few companies that used this new paradigm, Metris attracted customers all over the world, who inspired and pushed Metris to device and execute its buy-and-build strategy. Both through internal development as well as through external acquisitions of technologies and products, Metris arrived at its current position in the market: that of a challenger with the most innovative and complete product offering.
